Beat the heat with a wine cocktail

They used to be the butt of jokes all over, the dreaded wine spritzer.  But now wine cocktails are back in force and are a great way to beat the heat.

Mixing wine with other ingredients is a practice as old as the beverage itself and wine cocktails have never really lost their popularity in Europe.  Some of our most popular mixed drinks call for wine: both the martini and Manhattan call for vermouth, which is a type of wine.

Mixologist Trudy Thomas, director of beverage at Camelback Inn, Scottsdale, Arizona, has taken this concept a step further, introducing fresh flavors for a new kind of cocktail.  She developed the following recipes for [yellow tail] wine.

Shiratini

  • 1.5 oz. [yellow tail] Shiraz
  • 1 oz. blueberry-flavored vodka
  • 0.5 oz. orange liqueur
  • 0.5 oz. açai syrup (or 0.5 oz. of pomegranate juice)
  • 0.5 lime, pressed

In a mixing glass add all ingredients and shake with ice. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with a lime wheel.

Pomegranate Peach

  • 1 oz. [yellow tail] Sparkling Rosé Wine
  • 1 oz. peach flavored vodka
  • 1 oz. pomegranate liqueur
  • 2 oz. fresh lemonade

Shake all ingredients except [yellow tail] Sparkling Rosé Wine in a martini shaker with ice. Strain into a chilled martini or Collins glass. Top with [yellow tail] Sparkling Rosé Wine. Garnish with fresh blueberries.
